This necklace began with an exceptional opal—one rare enough to polish on both sides, revealing two distinct colour stories within the same stone. Most opals are cut with a backing to protect and intensify their colour, but this Coober Pedy gem was stable and saturated enough to stand alone, translucent and luminous from every angle.

The real innovation lies in the handcrafted swivel mechanism, made entirely in 14K gold at my bench. This allows the pendant to rotate freely, letting you flip between the two polished faces—one moment revealing red and pink fire, the next showing purple and green flashes. The open bezel setting holds the stone securely while allowing light to pass through from both sides, maximising the opal's natural brilliance.

Coober Pedy opals form in ancient sedimentary rock in the South Australian desert, created over millions of years as silica-rich water seeps through sandstone. The result is this—a 20mm window into geological time, polished to perfection and suspended in gold.
