This ring began with an exceptional Lightning Ridge opal—one of those rare stones where the colour intensity stops you mid-search. Semi black opals from Lightning Ridge are prized for their dark body tone, which makes the colour play appear more saturated and vivid. This particular stone delivers deep purple fire with flashes of dark blue that shift depending on the angle and light, creating an almost cosmic effect—like peering into deep space.
The freeform shape guided the design. Rather than forcing the stone into a traditional oval or round cut, I let its natural soft triangular form dictate the setting. The east-west orientation gives the ring a modern, grounded presence on the hand, while the 9K yellow gold bezel provides a warm contrast that makes the purple flashes appear even more electric in sunlight.
The textured squared band was hand-forged at my bench, creating subtle visual interest without competing with the opal's natural drama. The high shine finish on both the bezel and band ensures maximum light reflection, allowing the stone to perform at its full potential.
Lightning Ridge opals form in ancient sedimentary rock in New South Wales, created over millions of years as silica-rich water seeps through cracks and voids. The result is this—a 2.07-carat window into geological time, polished to reveal colours that don't exist anywhere else in nature.
Made slowly by hand, this one-of-a-kind piece celebrates the raw beauty of Australian opals and the quiet power of restrained design.
