This piece began with the stone.

With this particular Coober Pedy opal, chosen because of what it was already doing before I touched it.

The colour in this stone moves. Pinks surface first, then reds, then a deep purple that appears and disappears depending on the light. It is not a stone that gives everything away at once. It is the kind of piece you will still be noticing things in a year from now.

The east-west orientation was not a design trend. It was the right decision for this stone, the way it needed to sit on the hand to let the colour travel across the surface rather than concentrate in one spot.

The 14K gold bezel holds the opal without crowding it. The sterling silver band grounds the piece and makes it something you actually reach for every morning, not something you save.

This ring was made slowly, by hand, at my bench. It is for the woman who does not save beautiful things for later, who wears what matters to her every single day. There is only one. If it feels like yours, it probably is.

Are your opals real and solid?

Yes, and the distinction matters.

Every opal used in a Julia Paris Designs ring is a solid, natural Australian opal. This means the stone is a single, complete piece of opal exactly as it formed in the earth, with no backing, no layering, and no enhancement.

This is different from doublets and triplets, which are composite stones made by bonding a thin slice of opal to a dark backing material to amplify colour. They can look similar in a photograph but they are not the same stone, and they do not wear the same way over time.

When you buy from Julia Paris Designs, you are buying the real thing. One stone. Formed over millions of years. Set once.

Can opals get wet?

Yes solid opals can get wet.

What if the ring I want isn't in my size?

Most one-of-a-kind rings can be made one size larger at no extra charge. Resizing to other sizes is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Contact me directly and I will let you know what is possible for your specific piece.

Can I wear an Australian opal ring everyday?

This depends on what your hands do each day and how rough you are on your jewellery in general as this differs from person to person. I set my opals in bezel settings which greatly helps to protect the gemstones, but you should always avoid rough activities where stones can be knocked and scratched.

How do I know which Australian opal ring is right for me?

This is more of an emotional question that a buying question. The colour of the opal that you are drawn to the most is the one you should purchase. As each opal is so individual, as is the connection that each person will feel to that particular opals colours and characteristics. It is more of a feeling.

What makes a handmade Australian opal ring different from a mass-produced opal ring?

A mass-produced opal ring is built around a mould, not a stone. The setting is made first, and whatever stone fits is placed inside it. The result is a ring that could have been made for anyone, because it was.

A handmade Australian opal ring from Julia Paris Designs works in the opposite direction. The stone comes first. Each solid Australian opal is individually selected for its character, its play of colour, and the way it responds to light. The setting is then built around that specific stone, shaped to make space for exactly what it already is.
